Raquel Freire was born in Porto and is a daughter of the April revolution.
Raquel Freire is a film director, screenwriter, writer, producer and mother.
Her films RED RIVER, RASGANÇO, POISON HEALS, THIS IS MY FACE, DREAMOCRACY, premiered in International Film Festivals such as Venice, Turin, São Paulo, Montreal, Leeds, Clermont-Ferrand, Gwanju, Porto PosDoc, among others, in cinemas and television in Portugal and France.
She was distinguished at the Cannes Festival by the European Film Foundation as a young European producer.
She debuted as a theatre director, a creator and a performer with NOSOUTRXS, which premiered in the Temps D'Images Festival.
Raquel is a guest professor at Portuguese and foreign universities in the areas of cinema, gender studies, art and politics.
She published the book TRANSIBERICLOVE in 2014 and it sold out in the same year. In 2016 she published the short story DARK BLUE, edited in German and released in 2017 at the Frankfurt International Book Fair.
She won the CNC (Centre National du Cinéma Français) competition for writing support for the feature fiction film TRANSIBERICLOVE. The book that gave origin to it was republished in 2021.
She directed BY THE HAND OF ALICE, a documentary about Boaventura Sousa Santos as guest artist of the ALICE Project /CES /University of Coimbra.
She co-directed with Tainá Maneschy the animation film WOMEN OF MY COUNTRY, premiered in MAAT in 2020.
In 2021 Raquel debuted the documentary trilogy STORIES OF WOMEN FROM MY COUNTRY on the national television channel RTP1.
Raquel directed and produced the film WOMEN OF MY COUNTRY which was awarded an Honorable Mention at the Porto Femme International Film Festival in 2022.
She co-directed with La Ribot the short film DIFERENTNESS with the company Dançando com a Diferença.
She is an Advisory Board Member at Portugal Invisíveis e insubmissas: Leading Women in Portuguese and Spanish Cinema and Television, University of Exeter, U.K. University of Oxford and University of Kent.
She finishes her 3rd fiction feature film FILM WITHOUT CAMERA.
Raquel is in the pre-production of her next film WOMEN OF APRIL. for 2025
Activism and citizenship
He did a weekly chronicle at RDP Antena 1 entitled: Este Tempo, about new social movements, 2010-2012.
Director and activist, in parallel with the films, she made videos of Greenpeace's actions, Women On Waves, Act Up Paris, Guerrilla, Existrans, in France, Holland and Spain. He also makes videos for the 12 March March M12M Movement, Citizen Audit and other activist videos.
She is a co-founder of ACADEMIA CIDADÃ. He is co-founder of the March 12 Movement, M12M, which organized the “generation to scratch” protest on March 12, 2011. He participated in the foundation of the Citizen Audit Commission on Public Debt, 2011.
Organized with the M12M and various movements the ILC Citizen Legislative Initiative.
She was a speaker and organizer with M12M and Associação 25 de Abril das Conferências: Deepening Democracy.
Co-founder of the MPI Same-Sex Marriage Movement, 2008.
She was campaign director of the movement doctors for choice in the referendum on decriminalizing the Voluntary Interruption Pregnancy in 2007.
He is part of the Organizing Committee of the “Congress of Democratic Alternatives”.
She is part of the Scientific Committee of the 2nd Portuguese Feminist Congress. Member of the International Network to Fight Homophobia. Member of the Doctors Association for Choice-MPE. She is a contributor to the Women on Waves organization. He is a member of Cena. She is co-founder of Ponta-Associação Cultural and ARTprotesters, a collective of artists.
Other activities
Taught as a guest professor at Feminist Universities, 2013.
She taught as a guest professor at the FCSH Faculty of Human Social Sciences a summer course entitled “Queer Studies”, 2011.
Taught as invited teacher Realization, Video and Experimental Cinema and Artistic Project at ESAD.CR, 2009-2010.
She taught as an invited teacher an annual Seminar of Interpretation for Chamber in the Superior Theater course of ESMAE from 2003-2011.
In Portugal, France and Spain he teaches media training seminars for activists.
He writes for newspapers, magazines and websites, such as "Diário de Notícias", "Visão", "Le Monde Diplomatique", "Obscena". Write on the blog “5 dias”.
